We are trying to sell my mother-in-law's house, but it was built in the 70's with little update. I want to paint the dark paneling a lighter color to make it look bigger. I don't know what color to paint it. The rug is a slate blue.

I have tackled both blue carpets and dingy, dark paneling on past episodes of Sell This House. I suggest painting the paneling a light, neutral beige in either a satin or semi gloss finish. White would likely be too stark and you don't want to introduce any more color with blue carpet. Lightening up the paneling with paint will transform the space, and the effort will definitely pay off.
