The ULTIMATE Home Decorating Sin Poll RESULTS

We've tallied the results, and we're proud (well, maybe not proud...) to present:

#5: Gold-veined mirrors

Tied for fourth with 10% of the vote, you thought that gold-veined mirrors were tacky and outdated. Did your parents or grandparents have these mirrors in their entry hallway? Or do you remember them from nightclubs and lounges in the 60s? There was a bit of a kitschy comeback for them a few years ago, but thankfully they didn't stick around long this time.

#4: Fake plastic ivy and plants

Tied for fourth with 10% of the vote, you're tired of the fake plastic stuff. Dusty, sad, and unconvincing. And anyway, why should there be ivy growing inside your kitchen? Plants and flowers can bring life and color into your home, but invest the time in caring for the real thing and your kitchen will be much more appealing.

#3: Velvet paintings

Velvet paintings earned 13% of the vote. A staple at roadside art sales and mall kiosks even today, the paintings often feature mythical subjects such as unicorns, dragons, and Elvis. It's rare to see these paintings in homes these days, although some people hang them with a bit of a wink to their corny charm.

#2: Plastic covers on couches

In second place with 18% of the vote, plastic covers on couches are so very wrong they'll never be right. A fantastic way of ensuring you never actually enjoy your furniture, these clear covers are sticky and squeaky and - ironically - can actually damage the fabric underneath. FYI: If you're terrified of wear and tear on your upholstery, an inexpensive throw is a better solution. Also, many furniture stores offer comprehensive fabric protection and repair plans for a small additional fee. And you'll be able to enjoy the comfort and style the furniture brings into your home.

#1: Carpeted toilet seat covers

Our winner for the ULTIMATE home decorating sin with 22% of the vote. WHY, WHY, WHY?!? Bath mats are understandable. But few things seem dirtier, tackier, or more outdated than these covers. Bathrooms are, above all, supposed to feel clean, and affixing carpet to your toilet does the opposite. Now pardon me while I go wash my hands again. Ewwwwwww!
